Mike and Mike Roast Recap (or why Dana Jacobson slept in until 3 pm on Saturday)

January 14, 2008 · 43 Comments

Too long. Not funny. Dana Jacobson swilling vodka and being escorted off stage?

According to Scott Cronick of The Press of Atlantic City, that’s what happened on Friday night when ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic got celebrity roasted at Harrah’s. Not surprisingly, it sounds like the reliance on athletes to carry a night of comedy fell flat. However, the unintentional comedy scale was tipped quite heavily thanks to some surprising contributors.

Some highlights from the article (link to follow):

-Jeffrey Ross is the man. Anyone that has seen a Comedy Central roast knows that in situations like this, Ross has no equal. I guess he had to really earn his money with this one. Ed “Can’t” Reed? Hilarious.

-Funny? Not funny. Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, Clinton Portis, Wink Martindale (?!?) and Charlie Weis led the charge in silencing the crowd rather than inspiring them to actually have a good time.

-A wasted Dana Jacobson. I think we all knew the First Take anchor had a wild side to her. She has that look that screams, “Let’s do shots. Lots and lots of shots.” But I don’t think anyone could have predicted what D.J. was truly capable of. According to Cronick, she “made an absolute fool of herself,” downing vodka straight from the bottle, swearing like a drunken sailor and getting booed off stage! While the most aired clip today is Terrell Owens crying following the Cowboys’ loss, somewhere out there exists a tape of this performance that could overtake T.O.* So after hearing news of her performance, anyone making eye contact with Dana today? Is Skip Bayless being his snide self and pounding the desk about how being drunk in public is unacceptable and that we should go back to an era of prohibition?

*Speaking of this, where is this tape? We need that tape. We NEED that tape. How haven’t we seen even a grainy camera phone clip?

I didn’t hear much about the roast today and the blogosphere is surprisingly quiet on what happened. So much like Duel, this will be a forcefully forgotten memory in the history of ESPN’s Mike and Mike unless we can get video evidence to help it survive.

To read the recap, here you go.

I have read that she said “f**k Notre Dame” “f**k touchdown Jesus” “f**k Jesus” I doubt we will see the tape… ESPN doesn’t want it out there for all to see.

    D. Jacobsen, I am sure ESPN is going to biblical proportions to confiscate any tapes and rewrite history.

Well, ESPN is saying that some discipline is coming from those comments during the roast.

How is it that you can publicly hammered, curse like an animal, and yet still have a job to go to after you sober-up?

It is official…MSNBC has reported a one-week suspension related to the rant.Nobody else took it to that extreme…now, perhaps a personal apology to Greeny and Golic is in order.

Also, I have to credit Mike Golic, Charlie Weis, AND Eddie Griffin for taking the high road in this…any one of them could have flipped out on Dana over the various comments made while so drunk (Golic and Weis about Notre Dame and Jesus—and Griffin—or any of the athletes of color there—about blacks.)Yes, being a little bit drunk is expected in a roast, but even so, some professionalism has to be maintained, and if the Press of AC is right, somebody from ESPN or Harrah’s should have ended it there before Jeffery Ross did.

This is a Jewish person saying hateful things about Catholics, i.e.: “Fuck Jesus”. If this were a Catholic saying something bad about Jews, that person would no longer have a job and it would be a very, very well-reported event.

This is total crap. If this had been a male making those comments at the “Big 4 Letter Network,” he’d be heading up the unemployment line right now…

To the poster who posted two posts above me: I didn’t say that because I wasn’t sure if Dana is…or if it was just because Golic is a graduate of Notre Dame.

I am an avid fan of ESPN sports but after Dana’s fiasco. Her comments were foolish & inapproiate. She should resign or be fired by ESPN.

How could anyone who was around when espn started be a fan of espn now? In the beginning they broadcasted sports. Now all they do is talk about what happens in sports…..they talk about the same thing over and over over and overover and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over .. Espn is just crap now.

ok lets all take a deap breath and actually think about what you are getting so all puffed up about… for some reason most of the post i read here are from the holier than thou people who actually have forgotten what its actuallylike to let loose, have fun, and leave your self absorbed, all mighty rightous attitudes at the door….. its clearly obvious that for the most part the main stream has forgotten the basic reality of the situation at hand.. ITS A ROAST for cryin out loud. so she had a few drinks OMG!!! u mean she actually was haveing fun from her uptight fast pace always looking over your shoulder workplace… and had the brass u know what to feel safe enough to do what so many of us are so scared to do…. witch is be free of judgeing eyes and ears and actually be herself???? think about it… the people she was roasting for example…. golic and green… you really think those two personalities are ” perfection” if im not mistaken im sure golic on many occations has used derogetory comment as well as a few bottle tipping occasions while in his professional heyday while in the nfl… and green im sure has had a few in hi while trying to be the life of a party and has made remarks that we all wouldnt be proud of…. the point here is this. noby is perfect, we all have made and will continue to make mistakes, and yes this means you too so instead of calling for this womans head on a platter because she said f-jesus and f-notre dame… think about the many time youve said oh f-them, or better yet looked at someone and dissmissed them because of race or ethnic religeous background.. and dont look so shocked.. U HAVE and i have too… think about it…point being IT WAS A ROAST, witch means it was suppose to be all in good fun, all about makeing jokes that may at times seem over the top but yet to the point… i know because i have been involved in many from howard stern all the way down to tom hanks…..and no not on stage but but on the scene working with all that contributed to thehos fine moments… and belive me much worse had been said…. so lighten up and really think about what you consider whats right and wrong….what should and should NOT be said …..after that u might actually realize that its really not as bad as u might think rather than haveing someone else tell you that it is or isnt……

it was a roast, your right, loosen your tie and have a good time. If the last 2 weeks hadn’t been littered with the comments made by Kelly Tilghman this might have not been such a big deal. but because the golf channel suspended kelly im sure ESPN feels the need to disepline Dana in the same manner. THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THIS ROAST WAS NOT BEING BRODCAST. I’m sure if you have heard the material that is used during other roasts you would realize that Dana’s comments are no worse than lisa lampanelli’s.

Balance people…Balance. It’s NOT ok be-cuz it was “just a roast”…and it’s NOT a “fire-able” offense. She gets suspended, docked pay & takes the embarassment. Plus, she has to endure a ratings hit which could still sink her.Balance.

news flash, direct from the vatican: bashing notre dame is not the equivalent of bashing catholicism. one can be a good catholic, and detest notre dame, and the mockery they make of touchdown jesus, and still be a good catholic.

Please. Not one of the posters here calling for resignations and punishments is living in a glass house. Admit it – the minute you read the story your own “foot-in-mouth – what have I done – how will I ever live it down” moment sprang to mind. Get over it. She’s a smart, educated woman who had a little too much to drink at a roast. It happens – no one dies. Move on.

That’s right. It’s us uptight Christians who need to get over ourselves. After all, this was a roast. It’s no big deal if someone gets drunk and says “F*** Jesus”. Especially for someone who doesn’t know Jesus. You can get in trouble for calling someone a “Nappy Headed Ho” or saying that the only way to beat Tiger Woods is to “Lynch Him”, but saying “F*** Jesus” at a roast while representing ESPN and ABC should just be swept under the carpet. After all, everyone knows that Jesus is just a myth that us idiotic Christians have bought into.Bill in New Orleans

Dana Jacobson should be fired. What she said equates to “hate language.” If she had said F— Jews, she would have been fired already. Why is it that slandering Christianity doesn’t merit the same response? It’s called accountability. Yes, she made a minstake, and should be forgiven. But she should also face consequences.

  • <img src="http://www.blogger.c // January 24, 2008 at 5:03 pm | Reply

She won’t get fired for this. If she had said F Allah maybe, but the left wing liberals at ESPN will make sure that they cover this up!

  • <img src="http://www.blogger.c // January 24, 2008 at 5:33 pm | Reply

Dana Jacobson should be fired. Swilling vodka straight from the bottle does not give her a free pass to make hatefull, anti-Christian remarks. If her hate were sprewed at Jews or Arabs, she would already be fired. Send your cooments to ESPN and let them know how you feel. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?page=contact/espntv

It’s a roast!!! That is what happens at these things…Nothing is hurtful or hateful…just trying to get laughs by being shocking…

  • <img src="http://www.blogger // January 25, 2008 at 12:26 pm | Reply

What should have warranted the suspension—IF ANYTHING—would be the drinking of the vodka in such a matter…not so much the comments said. If it was simply a “F*** Touchdown Jesus”, what is the problem with that? It isn’t making fuh of Catholics, just something on the campus.(BTW, I’m Catholic.)Now, ESPN First Take has looked a lot better with Sage instead of Dana being the co-host.

  • <img src="http://www.blogger.c // January 25, 2008 at 2:54 pm | Reply

Those of you who think this was a firable offense need to GET A F**KING GRIP. First of all this was obviously meant to be a JOKE, since it was A ROAST! I’ve heard worse content aired on Comedy Central’s many roasts they air on cable TV!!! This was not broadcast for all to hear, it was clearly meant as a jab towards Golic who is a proud Notre Dame grad and she a proud Michigan alum. The stuff about Touchdown Jesus, if Catholics want to get up in arms about saying F**K touchdown Jesus, they should realize that having a Touchdown Jesus is hypocritical to their entire religion, as I was raised Catholic and realized how hypocritical it can be and is. But that’s for a whole other blog. It was a indeed in bad taste, and nobody is disagreeing on that. But her punishment for such a foul should be the embarrassment I’m sure she is feeling right now, and I’m sure she will feel everytime she has to look her colleagues in the eyes until she allows enough time to pass without incident and it becomes a memory that all can laugh about in the future.I’ve been in these situations before, adn believe she’s embarrassed, but by no means should she be fired, and quite honestly she shouldn’t have even been suspended. But what the hell, this whole country is just going to uptight and politically correct itself to certain death anyway. Good luck to us all!! Enjoy life for godsakes get off her back and worry about your own lives as pathetic as I’m sure many of them are.

you know, im all for the whole “IT WAS A ROAST” defense, but i have learned something new and i alomst have to agree with jacobson. why on earth does notre dame have an image of jesus with his arms raised like the kick was good???? what does that say about the true values of the school, the heritage of the people that allowed him to be portrayed in such a fashion, and please dont try and tell me that it wasn’t meant to be interpreted i that fashion when it was put there. teenagers dont put photos of woman on their walls because they like the background, notre dame was making a statement with this portrait of jesus. it would be blasphamy if it werent apart of notre dame culture so im with jacobson F*** NOTRE DAME.

If you get upset by this, take a look at any of the Comedy Central roasts. The language and the extreme nature of the put downs are all par for the course.Around the same time that Don Imus was fired for saying something mean, CC roasted Bill Shatner. Some the the comments about Nichelle Nichols even made me uncomfortable, especially since she was there in the room. The same types of comments were made about George Takei’s homosexuality. He was also in the room. This is accepted at these events now. That doesn’t make it right but if you are offended don’t watch, care or even pay attention. People like Jacobson or Imus don’t need to lose their jobs because of bad judgement.BTW on CC ALL of the language is aired.I only found out about this after her apology after coming back from the suspension. I thought her apology was sincere and I’m sure she personally apologized to Coach Weis and anyone else she offended that was there.
